What I thought

A delightful read that celebrates the strength of a mother's love. There's also a message there about bullying. The book is wonderfully illustrated and simply written to appeal to young readers, who sit on the edge of their seats hoping that Kaalia will get his come uppance. I used it as a platform for a PHSE lesson on bullying but it's a wonderful shared read, and easy enough for children to join in with.

About the Author & Illustrator: Subhash & Sujata Kommuru

Subhash and Sujata Kommuru hail from India. They migrated to the United States along with their memories of childhood and youth. Now that they are parents, just like every immigrant they crave to introduce their child to the culture and values of their upbringing. Yet it is challenging to teach something while you are in the midst of adjusting to a different culture yourself.
Subhash and Sujata both work in different disciplines and have different styles and backgrounds, but it is the upbringing of their son that brings them on the same page. That exact place where they meet is captured and reflected in their stories, where Subhash can express in words, and Sujata can illustrate them beautifully. Where he puts it in black and white, she adds colour to it. You get the idea!

About The Author: J.C. Whyte

When J.C. Whyte was eleven, her 6^th grade teacher gave a class assignment to write a poem about a sport. Realizing her classmates would probably choose popular American sports like baseball or football, J.C. decided to write about something different: golf. And to her complete surprise, the teacher found it comical; she was thereby encouraged to keep writing. Then over summer break, students were told to choose 26 books from a reading list and write a book report on each. J.C. was horrified! She wanted to enjoy her summer, not spend it reading! You see, J.C. was a very slow reader and didn’t much enjoy the experience. Plus, kids back then didn’t have all the fun books to choose from today. But that same teacher who had assigned the sports poem told J.C.’s mother she could write 26 stories instead of reading them. That was absolute genius! Although she didn’t actually write 26 stories (perhaps six?), J.C. submitted one which made her teacher laugh out loud in class. And she got an “A” on her summer reading assignment. J.C. has never forgotten that wise teacher who let her play to her strengths. So from the age of eleven, J.C. knew she wanted to be a writer. Yet by the time she reached college, she understood that writing stories seldom paid the bills. So she got her degrees in Journalism and Communications Management. Then for many years she channeled her creative energies in the field of Public Relations. About the Author: Cat Michaels

 

CAT MICHAELS started writing stories in fourth grade and hasn’t stopped since. After earning an M.S. degree in special education from the University of Kansas, she spent two decades helping students from kindergarten to college reach their potential. Now to my book review.

I am pleased to be joining in with a Book Review Blitz for “The Templar Chronicles” middle grade/young adult book series by Jeff Gunhus.  I’ve had the pleasure of reading and reviewing each of the three books.  They are FANTASTIC!

 

"Yeah, you read it right. I’m a monster hunter. Back before I actually became one, I would have thought that sounded totally awesome. And don’t get me wrong, in a lot of ways it is. But most of the time, I’m either running for my life or hiding in the shadows, praying the monster chasing me doesn’t pick up my scent. And I’m almost always scared to death. In a few pages, I think you’ll see why.

 

But there are a few things I need to warn you about before I tell you my story.

 

First, this isn’t a cartoon. These are bloodthirsty creatures who will stop at nothing to kill. They are scary. Very scary. Second, the only way to stop them is to kill them first...and that gets gross and messy. Third, this is all real.

 

You think I’m kidding, don’t you? I can almost see you smirking as you read this. But this isn’t a joke."

 

We all know how difficult it can be to engage reluctant readers, especially boys. If you're anything like me, you spend hours and hours scouring book shops, libraries and any other nook or cranny for the golden nugget that will appeal to these children. So imagine how thrilled I was to find the Jack Templar Chronicles.

 

This series of books charts the adventures of Jack, who discovers on his fourteenth birthday that he is a monster hunter with very strange powers. The books are thrilling and keep the reader captivated from cover to cover. Full of energy and adventure, the plots are well-written and the characters believable.

 

The books were well written and fun to read, with more than a dash of humour. I challenge any young person not to get dragged into the world of Jack Templar and love it!

Book Review Blitz - Frankie Dupont and the Mystery of Enderby Manor

I am delighted to bring you news of a fabulous book in the Frankie Dupont series by Julie Ann Grasso.

My Review

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for a frank and honest review.

I am always on the look-out for new books to use with my class, so I was excited to be able to review this one. I read the book in one sitting.

Frankie is a detective in training. He is called to a case at Enderby Manor, a large hotel close to his home, where his cousin Kat has mysteriously disappeared. Enderby Manor isn't all it seems, and Frankie has to delve deep into the evidence, assume nothing and read between the lines if his he to find Kat. Time is running out - will Frankie succeed...?

A fantastic book for boys and girls of 7-11, and sure to engage the most reluctant readers.

Book Blitz Review - "Dream Warriors"

I am so happy to be joining in with a Book Review Blitz for the new Young Adult book by D. Robert Pease (author of the Noah Zarc series) “Dream Warriors: Joey Cola, Book 1″

 My Review

Having read the blurb I was really looking forward to getting my teeth into this book. And it didn't disappoint. A thrilling story of adventure and intrigue with more than its fair share of twists and turns. Joey Cola is a new breed of hero. I couldn't help but notice the parallels with the story of Joseph and his coat of many colours - second youngest of twelve brothers, bullied because he was given preferential treatment by his father, thrown down a manhole and transported to Egypt where he experienced remarkably lifelike dreams.

Fabulous book, believable characters and gripping plot. I loved it!

It almost felt like watching a tv show in the sense that you are brought into the world of Jack the Boogey instead of trying to imagine the scariest non-monster possible. I do think that this is a great read for Young Readers because of the conflict and resolution. I enjoyed that Jack showed vulnerability (being upset over the children's misunderstanding that he was actually a helpful GOOD monster) and that it was OK to show emotion. This is a great lesson for all young readers. About the Authors: Davon & Chase Washington

Davon Washington is an entertainment executive who was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Davon has made a career out of helping people bring their artistic dreams to fruition. My Thoughts

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book as much as my kids enjoyed listening. A perfect bedtime read, it incorporates simple rhyme with gorgeous illustrations. Each plane is full of energy during the day, but settles down for a good night's sleep - just like your little ones. Which one will they choose to be their favourite? This will become a firm bedtime favourite - guaranteed...

About the Author: Louise Lintvelt

I am from South Africa and I live in a city called Pretoria. I am a Chemical Engineer by day and a children’s book writer by night. I am married to a wonderful man and we have a beautiful two year old daughter called Allegra. I love writing stories for my daughter, who is a constant inspiration. I have always loved reading. My childhood was filled with books and you would often find me crouched the corner of my room devouring the pages of my favourite book. I lived for Tuesday mornings as this would bring with it the excitement of a trip to the local library for story hour and the opportunity to take home a new book. I was the local librarian’s worst nightmare. I would arrive a few minutes early to check that she had not mistakenly chosen a book that had already been read in story hour. I was a very bossy three year old with an insatiable appetite for books! This has not really changed much in the last twenty seven years. Dr. Seuss was my absolute favourite and to say that my copy of One, Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish Blue Fish was well read would be an understatement. When it comes to writing, my daughter is my biggest inspiration. I love seeing her face light up with excitement when we sit down to read a book before bedtime. My daughter was fascinated by giraffes after we went on a safari trip in late 2012. This planted the seed for my picture book called How Andrew Got His Spots which is a rhyming adaptation of a story I originally wrote in the third grade. My daughter has since grown into a healthy two year old with a passion for aircraft which was the inspiration for writing Goodnight, Sleep tight, What a Wonderful Flight. I am sure that there are many parents in the world (myself included), who are quite decidedly sick and tired of reading the same favourite picture book night after night. I believe that the words of Oscar Wilde best describe how children should feel about picture books when he said, If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all.
