What if...? by Jessica Barondes

What People Are Saying

"What if...? is a bittersweet and sometimes comical tale of a tween girl, P, who must come to terms with the loss of her mother as she navigates the world of dating, puberty, school, and friendships. P will absolutely warm your heart and the ending is guaranteed to leave you teary-eyed. While I sometimes felt that the themes were more appropriate for teens, I also came to realize that tween girls will also really enjoy reading about the world that they are just on the cusp of entering. *shudder* Ages 10+." ~ Renee @ Mother Daughter Book Reviews

"What a treat to fall in love with a character from the first second you begin to read her story. P has wit, charm, pluck, charisma--and a lot of things to learn. I totally loved her voice, world, friends and the many ways in which she drove her father Georgy insane. Full of laughs and love this charming book is a wonderful read--no matter what your age." ~ 5 Star Review, Blue, Amazon

"This is a charming and delightful read from start to finish, filled with characters you really care about, especially the unique girl "P" at the center. You don't have to be in this age group or life situation to relate to the sweet and heartfelt story about wanting the best for those you love. It's timeless and inspiring and may bring a tear to your eye!" ~ 5 Star Review, Susan A., Amazon
"Witty, intelligent and edgy coming-of-age book for girls (and parents!). This little book is a real gem. I bought it for my nieces too in hopes that they will appreciate their moms more! (and give their dads a chance to be a true hero, like the dad in this book!) I would bet that school libraries, teachers, parents and girls will rate this book a favorite for years to come." ~ 5 Star Review, Louann B., Amazon

"I was absolutely enchanted from the first page. This book made me cry! It was delightful. The story so sweet and the characters endearing and so real. By the time I got to the end, I just wanted to burst out in applause. This book is a joy to read at any age but perfect for the "tween" reader." ~ 5 Star Review, Jen W., Amazon

"Both my 11-year old daughter and I loved this wonderfully written book. Charming and exciting from beginning to end, this book is a real treasure." ~ 5 Star Review, Susan L., Amazon

What People Are Saying

"I highly recommend this adorable tale to children who don't want to go to sleep at night because they are afraid the Boogeyman will get them! They just might discover that this isn't true. " ~ 5 Star Review, Amy G., Amazon

"My little one and I thoroughly enjoyed the story (he made me read it twice as soon as I took it out of the package and I had to distract him with Monsters University to get away to write a review), but the real treat to me was stashed in the cover blurb hidden away in the back of the book. It's written by Davon Washington and his son, Chase. Davon wanted to help young Chase understand how much work and effort went into providing the nice things he had, so he let Chase make this a project in which they could collaborate and Chase could get an idea of the value of hard work. To me, that's the best part of the story! " ~ 5 Star Review, Breeni B., Amazon

"I loved this book! The illustrations were such a big pull for me. It almost felt like watching a tv show in the sense that you are brought into the world of Jack the Boogey instead of trying to imagine the scariest non-monster possible. I do think that this is a great read for Young Readers because of the conflict and resolution. I enjoyed that Jack showed vulnerability (being upset over the children's misunderstanding that he was actually a helpful GOOD monster) and that it was OK to show emotion. This is a great lesson for all young readers. Sometimes when they see life lessons happening via forms of entertainment (books, movies, tv, et al) vs. just hearing about it from their parents, it sinks in a bit more." ~ 5 Star Review, LaToya, Amazon

About the Authors: Davon & Chase Washington

Davon Washington
Davon Washington is an entertainment executive who was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Davon has made a career out of helping people bring their artistic dreams to fruition. The same people who more often than not do very little to enhance the tender minds of the culture that supports them. Creative thinking isn't a skill that you learn as an adult. It starts with that same imagination that we let run wild after we've mastered harder tasks like walking, talking and using the bathroom ourselves. It's Davon's mission to build a nation of creative thinkers one book at a time. Davon and his six-year old son, Chase collaborated to bring Jack the Boogey is My Real Name to life. This is their first book.

Amazon Giftcard Giveaway and Summer Reading Book Blast - The Cat Who Lost his Meow

Now that summer is here are you busy thinking of ways to keep your kids occupied? I have the perfect solution for you.

I have just test driven a new book by Angela Muse. "The Cat Who Lost His Meow" is a delightful little book with an underlying message of finding one's courage.

The Cat Who Lost His Meow by Angela Muse

One day, Chester the Calico Cat opened his mouth to meow and nothing came out! He searched frantically for his voice, but to no avail. Without thinking of the consequences, his search took him to the top of a tall tree. Chester was frightened but plucked up the courage to make his way down. He was so overjoyed when he reached the ground that he opened his mouth and out came a celebratory meow! Through perseverance and courage, Chester achieved what he had set out to do. From that day he counted his blessings and made the most of them.

A fantastic tale with underlying messages for children and adults alike. This book is a great shared read, or can be read individually, as the language is accessible enough for new readers to have a go themselves. Children get drawn up in the suspense of whether Chester will ever find his voice again, and celebrate with him when he finally does.

Don't forget to enter the Rafflecopter giveaway to win a $50 Amazon giftcard or Paypal cash equivalent. Click here for the Rafflecopter link or scroll down for full details.

As usual, here are all the details of the book:

It was hard trying to make new friends, but Angela discovered she had a knack for writing. In high school Angela began writing poetry and song lyrics. Expressing herself through writing seemed very natural. After becoming a Mom in 2003, Angela continued her storytelling to her own children. In 2009 she wrote and published her first rhyming children's book aimed at toddlers. I've Got the Mid-Winter Blues

I'm a winter baby. Born in the middle of February when the weather is at its worst. So I suppose I should take to winter like a duck to water.

But oh no. I'm not a winter person - I hate being cold. I often wish I could hibernate for the whole winter - not sleep for a full 3 months, but just stay indoors and wait. Unfortunately that can't happen so I tend to struggle between November and February, until March brings slightly milder weather.

It's so depressing! Even Christmas doesn't cheer me up! So I was so grateful to Beth Ann when she told me about her fab idea to help chase away those mid-winter blues. I jumped at the chance to join in with her Giveaway.

Starting today, a whole host of blogger friends will be joining up to offer some fantastic prizes. I'll be throwing in one of my newest resources too. So for a chance to grab some goodies, pop on over to Beth Ann at Taming my Flock of Firsties and get that Rafflecopter busy.

It's Hallowe'en...and Mrs V is a Busy Bee

It's Hallowe'en - and it's raining...

As always... But I'm watching news reports of Sandy on TV and I'm thanking my blessings that we don't get hurricanes and tornadoes in the UK (yet...). I hope everyone managed to stay safe.

So, for Hallowe'en tonight I'll be staying indoors in the warm. I won't be forgetting all the little 'uns though - I've got a whole bucketful of goodies ready and waiting for when they knock.

Today we're off to Swansea to an open day at the university. This will be our second university visit, and so far Mia is no closer to making up her mind... She's thinking about a combined degree in dance and drama. but we can't find anything that comes close - it's either dance or drama, or dance with business studies or teaching. What she really wants to do is go to RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts) or LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts), but neither offer dance... Difficult decisions. Difficult being 18...

Just in case you're still looking...

I thought I'd post up a quick summary of all things Hallowe'en in my shop, just in case you're still looking for bits and bobs. As you can see, most of the freebies I posted last week are still available at no charge, so pop along and snap them up. I've also posted my Presidential Election resources. There are three resources available at the moment, although I hope to also add another pack "If I Was President" if I have time this week.

At the moment I have a huge activity pack designed to get children thinking about character development, a fully animated slide show giving all the facts about how the US electoral system works, and a combined pack of both resources. Both resources individually cost $5 but when bought together in the combined pack you get them at a massive saving of $1.50.

All of the resources are available in my TPT store too, if you prefer to shop there. Hope you find something you're looking for.

Mrs V's Busy Bees 500 Giveaway

Don't forget to pop on over to Sara's fab blog Mrs V's Busy Bees to check out her huge giveaway. She's celebrating 500 followers with some fabulous prizes for the winners. Here's the button that will take you straight there.

Election Fever and a Busy Bee Giveaway

Election Fever

Election fever has taken its grip. It may seem that it's an American thing, but there's a lot of interest on this side of the pond too. I know who I'm rooting for - but that would be telling.... shhhhhhhh..

It's difficult to find a "way in" to teach young learners about the election process. Heaven knows it's hard enough over here (and our system is a little easier to get to grips with..), but boy is the US Electoral College system hard to grasp. So I feel for all your young kiddos. Yes, they do need to know something especially as they move into the higher grades. So... I've been busy!

Some of you may have already had a quick glimpse of part one of my my Presidential Election 2012 pack - an animated slide show. I posted it under cover of darkness last night as I didn't want to tell you all about it until part two was ready today. I spent most of today putting the finishing touches to part two - a huge activities pack which supports the slide show. They are both aimed at our older learners (who sometimes get overlooked in the process of resource-making - I hold my hands up to being guilty on that score sometimes...).

The slide show presents the facts about the electoral system in easy to understand child-friendly language, with cool kids graphics, lots of speech bubbles, sounds and animations.

The activities pack begins with a Cool Kids KWHL chart to brainstorm facts already known, things they want to know, and how they will go about finding out. Through teacher input and independent research, children then build up biographies of the candidates, and research the key issues they represent. Finally, they use books and websites to research information for their own presentation to the class on their chosen candidate.

I am so proud of this one! You can get the slide show and activities pack separately if you'd rather not have both. If you decide that you want both, the whole package is available at a discounted price of $8.50 when bought together - that's a saving of $1.50! Click the images for Teachers Notebook or the links for TPT.

Exciting Launch of an Exclusive Freebies Club

Firstly, thanks to all of you who have "liked" my Facebook page and are (hopefully..!) enjoying all the Hallowe'en freebies. I had such a lot of fun pulling them together for you.

Last night I got to thinking about how I could treat you on a regular basis with exclusive freebie. Now don't get me wrong, I LOVE my blog and my Facebook page, and that will never change. But I want to go that extra mile for all my wonderful followers and likers - all of you deserve spoiling once in a while.

Luckily I don't sleep much, and when I do it's so shallow that I'm hardly asleep - I dream up (literally..!) solutions to the day's issues.

Solution found - the new SOS Supply Exclusive Members' Club has now been launched.

My blog and Facebook page will continue to be the places where I post all my news, freebies and details of how to get hold of my resources. But as a member of the club you will be able to get a little extra. You will be able to access some freebies exclusively for you, and some in advance of posting to the public. You will also get lots of news and chat. It's FREE to sign up, so pop on over to the group now (click on the apple to take you straight there below) and ask to be added to the group. Alternatively, send me your email address and I'll add you.

I'm unsure if this idea will take off or not, but hey ho, let's give it a go!

Trick or Treat Freebie #3

Today's freebie is a set of cute bookmarks that you can give to your kiddos instead of candy - why contribute to the rot when you can encourage good reading, I say..

As always this week, they are available to followers of my Facebook page - so if you're not already signed up, rush on over and do it now. The bookmarks are only free for one day, but all of my freebies this week will be available afterwards in my TPT and TN stores at a knockdown price.

Harry Potter and the Gemino Spell - Singular and Plural

Harry Potter and the Gemino Spell

I love Harry Potter! I've read all of the books and watched all of the films. I am more than a little saddened at the demise of the stories of the boy wizard. So I decided to keep the legend alive myself. Yesterday I posted a new resource in time for Hallowe'en - Harry Potter's Transfiguration Class, which helps children "transfigure" words into new words (compound words to you and me...).

I wanted to do something with plurals - always a tricky area, especially with those words that do not take a straightforward "s". But how to link it in with HP? Then I remembered the scene in "Deathly Hallows", where Harry, Hermione and Ron break into the Lestrange vault in Gringotts bank. The treasure that they seek is hidden in the vault and within reach, but the contents of the vault have been cursed with the Gemino curse, which duplicates items when they are touched, thus creating lots of worthless fakes and protecting the original. Hmmm, singular to plural - and hey presto, there's my link!

This pack contains lots of great activities to help children learn and practise the rules for  plurals. It has activities for turning singular words into plurals and vice versa. There is an activity on those tricky plural changes, and a very useful skill check where the children can test their learning. I have also included a game of "Go Fish" with over 40 words to match up.

The pack is available in my TN and TPT stores right now. Click on the pictures to go there. If you enter my Giveaway, you could even win yourself a copy or two... You can find out more by clicking the Giveaway picture below. Good luck!
