1st March is World Book Day!

World Book Day is a celebration! It’s a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) it’s a celebration of reading. In fact, it’s the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.

Keep reading for details of how to win a TPT gift card to spend on goodies for World Book Day.
This is the 21st year there’s been a World Book Day, and on 1st March 2018, children of all ages will come together to appreciate reading. Very loudly and very happily. Here in the UK and Ireland the main aim of World Book Day is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own. That’s why  schools (including those nurseries and secondary schools that have specially registered to participate) will be receiving packs of Book Tokens and age-ranged World Book Day Resource Packs (age-ranged into Nursery/Pre-School, Primary and Secondary) full of ideas and activities, display material and more information about how to get involved in World Book Day.

Keep reading for details of how to win a TPT gift card to spend on goodies for World Book Day.

WHAT HAPPENS?

Thanks to the generosity of National Book Tokens Ltd, publishers and booksellers, the people at World Book Day  send millions of book tokens to children and young people (some 15 million, in fact: that’s one for nearly every child aged under eighteen in the country).

THEN…

They can take their book token to a local bookseller and can use it to pick one of TEN (exclusive, new and completely free) books. Or, if they’d rather, they can use it to get £1 off any book or audio book costing over £2.99 at a participating bookshop or book club (terms and conditions apply).

Keep reading for details of how to win a TPT gift card to spend on goodies for World Book Day.

HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED?

The website contains lots of new downloadable resource packs based on favourite books, brands, characters and authors.

It’s all about getting kids closer to the books and authors they already love, and letting them discover more books and authors they’ll love every bit as much in the future.

What Are you doing for World Book Day?

Let me know what you will be doing to celebrate World Book Day and you could be in with a chance of winning a free TPT giftcard. All you have to do to is leave your comments on my Facebook page and share with your friends. I'd love to see your pictures too! Click through the golden ticket below to enter. The winning entry will be drawn at random on Friday 9th March. Good luck!

Sing-a-Long Construction Song - Win

I am so pleased to be joining in a Book Review Blitz for the newly-released picture book “Sing-Along Construction Song” by Louise Lintvelt . This is an absolutely delightful new book by the author of “Goodnight, Sleep Tight: Have a Wonderful Flight” and “How Andrew Got His Spots”, both of which I reviewed during the summer, and which my kids thoroughly enjoyed.

** This book features vivid illustrations and kindle pop-up text**
** A free song download for this book is available at LouiseLintvelt.com **

A fun sing-along book for little construction enthusiasts.  Visit the construction site early in the morning and join the rough and tough construction vehicles, as they go about their daily work.

What People are Saying

“This may very well be the most beautiful construction book on the market – definitely the best I’ve ever seen on the subject.  Sing-Along Construction Song has gorgeous watercolour illustrations and the rhymes are quite obviously very well thought out. This book makes the PERFECT read-aloud for an all-age group and isn’t just a “boy book”. ~ 5 Star Review, Jenny, Amazon

My Review

I knew from reading her previous books that we were in for a treat when I was asked to review "Sing-a-Long Construction Song" - and I was not wrong! It's another winner for Louise Lintvelt.

The book is a magical blend of sing-song rhymes, appealing characters and the most beautiful watercolour illustrations. My kids loved joining in with the construction song, which was set to a well-known tune and had very easy, catchy words. The free download was a huge hit too. Great for boys and girls alike - a fabulous read-aloud.

About the Author: Louise Lintvelt

Louise Lintvelt

I am from South Africa and I live in a city called Pretoria. I am a Chemical Engineer by day and a children’s book writer by night. I am married to a wonderful man and we have a beautiful two year old daughter called Allegra. I love writing stories for my daughter, who is a constant inspiration.
I have always loved reading. My childhood was filled with books and you would often find me crouched the corner of my room devouring the pages of my favourite book. I lived for Tuesday mornings as this would bring with it the excitement of a trip to the local library for story hour and the opportunity to take home a new book. I was the local librarian’s worst nightmare. I would arrive a few minutes early to check that she had not mistakenly chosen a book that had already been read in story hour.

I was a very bossy three year old with an insatiable appetite for books! This has not really changed much in the last twenty seven years. Dr. Seuss was my absolute favourite and to say that my copy of One, Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish Blue Fish was well read would be an understatement.

When it comes to writing, my daughter is my biggest inspiration. I love seeing her face light up with excitement when we sit down to read a book before bedtime. My daughter was fascinated by giraffes after we went on a safari trip in late 2012. This planted the seed for my picture book called How Andrew Got His Spots which is a rhyming adaptation of a story I originally wrote in the third grade. My daughter has since grown into a healthy two year old with a passion for aircraft which was the inspiration for writing Goodnight, Sleep Tight, What a Wonderful Flight.

I am sure that there are many parents in the world (myself included), who are quite decidedly sick and tired of reading the same favourite picture book night after night. I believe that the words of Oscar Wilde best describe how children should feel about picture books when he said, If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all.
Happy Reading!

What Others Are Saying

"Mysteries of the Grand Canyon is educational, exciting, and entertaining all rolled into one. Marie Von Minden gives readers a fascinating glimpse into the canyon's past as well as the creatures that still call the Grand Canyon home. The interactive function allows for further learning and the brilliant photos visually stimulate children and help instil the knowledge found within the story." I highly recommend picking up a copy of Mysteries of the Grand Canyon." ~ BeachBoundBooks

"A must have experience for young people. With its cute, intelligent looking dog, and a bird that looks like it was conceived by Dr. Seuss, it puts us into an animal society - so beautifully conceived in its civility, generosity, and interest and care for the world - that it is reminiscent of books like Winnie the Pooh. These elements, set in the grandeur of the Grand Canyon, beautifully brought out by magnificent photographs and videos, make it a compelling book from both parents' and teachers' points of view. ~ Mr. Naturally, iBookstore Review

"Overall, this iBook provides a great introduction to the Grand Canyon to children who are about to visit it or who just want to learn more about this important National Park. It includes lots of beautiful photographs, the story is engaging and there is a huge wealth of information included. I found it a great opportunity to talk about the Grand Canyon with my son, and tell him about my own experiences visiting the park and hiking into the crater. I also really enjoyed learning about the California Condor and all the effort that has gone into the Recovery Program; it provided a great opportunity to talk about Endangered Species and our responsibility to help preserve them." ~ iMum

"More than just a story, the book has incredible imagery that appears to lift off the page – a true photographic journey." ~ Mom's Lifesavers

"Readers of all ages will enjoy this engaging story to discover one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World at the Grand Canyon National Park. This photographically rich and entertaining ebook is especially appropriate for 7-11 year olds and as a read aloud for younger children, and it would also be well suited for an educational setting." ~ The Appy Ladies

"As a teacher, I am grateful to use this amazing book with my class! My students loved learning about the Grand Canyon from precious Kristi Kay's point of view, and they were excited to participate in the interactive aspects of the book; they didn't want to put it down!" ~ A. Gillette, iBookstore Review

About the Author: Marie von Minden

KK and Marie for websiteJPG
Would you like to live each day surrounded by unsurpassed beauty and deeply connected to nature? Marie finds it hard to believe, but this is now her lifestyle and she wants to share it through her photography and stories. Marie von Minden was born and raised in Poland. She immigrated to Canada in 1982 and in 1999 she and her husband relocated to the United States. Like many Europeans, she was overwhelmed by the vastness and the beauty of North America and she developed a passion for landscape photography. They began camping in the wilderness and connecting with nature on weekends and holidays, first in a tent and later in a cap-over camper. It was during those camping trips that a dream of full-time traveling and living in an RV evolved. In 2002 that dream became reality and they have been traveling in a 34 foot Airstream trailer ever since. America’s National Parks continue to be one of their favourite places to visit. When Kristi Kay, a Cairn Terrier, joined them, the idea of a children’s book series about America’s National Parks as seen through Kristi Kay’s eyes grew as a natural extension of their lifestyle and love of nature. Through interactive adventure stories enhanced by photography selected from her vast photographic library, animation, sounds, videos, and unique graphics Marie hopes to express her gratitude for what has become her home, and to help cultivate appreciation and stewardship of these precious resources.

Book Review - "The Princess Fables" and a $50 Giveaway

This is just THE most delightful book, perfect for princesses of all ages! When we read it I was transported back to my own childhood with tales of beautiful princesses, charming princes and fantastic magical creatures.  The author has succeeded, in persuading his own daughter of the merits of doing the right thing, of transporting her to a land of make believe in which she is the beautiful princess heroine. Isn't this something we all wanted when we were little girls...?

To set the scene: when the author's daughter was just beginning the first grade, she was not happy about school. So when he would wake her each morning, whatever she would say to get out of going became the subject for a PRINCESS FABLE. If she'd say, "I don't want to," he'd make up a tale about The Princess Who Always Said, "I Don't Wanna". If she pulled the covers over her head, he'd tell her the story of The Princess Who Hid Under The Covers. By the end of each Fable he'd have her dressed and ready for school, with her eyes wide open and full of hope...

"THE PRINCESS FABLES" is a collection of eleven inspirational stories for young girls who may still dream of being a princess. Each princess embarks on an adventure of self discovery and along the way, learns about the importance of trust, devotion, courage and the power of love. These classic tales transport little girls to a time and place where they are the heroines and can create their own happy endings. Every delicate pen and ink illustration reflects the classic fairy tale drawings of the late 19th century. The book is recommended for children of 3+. Personally, I feel that it is suitable for children aged 8+ to read independently, although the stories lend themselves nicely to being read aloud to children of all ages. Younger children would especially enjoy these at bedtime.

The Princess Fables was just awarded an Honorable Mention at the 2014 Los Angeles Book Festival.

Book Review - "Skycastle, the Demon, and Me" - and an Amazon Gift Card Giveaway

I LOVE children's books! It doesn't matter what genre or age group - picture books, fiction or non-fiction, I love them all! I've always had an extensive collection from my own childhood - classics such as Beatrix Potter, What Katy Did, Ann of Green Gables, Enid Blyton - you name it, I have it. But since I've been teaching I've built up a huge collection - I just can't seem to pass a book shop without buying something new!

So I am really excited to be able to review a new book that has only just hit the shelves.

"Skycastle, the Demon, and Me" is the first in a series of middle grade books for fearless, adventure loving kids. It charts the unlikely friendship between a boy and his new-found friend - a demon! It is a hellish adventure with cliffhangers aplenty to make even the most reluctant reader keep turning pages.

The book starts with a health warning:
"WARNING...this book contains a scowling demon, bad decisions, a skeleton key, not foul but hellish language, an ordinary boy and an extraordinary castle. You've been warned."

I was hooked. And stayed hooked until the very last word.

The book is well written in a way that is easily accessible to all, but still providing lots of opportunities for vocabulary extension. The story is gripping, and is especially appealing to boys of 9-12 - those who are most difficult to engage and keep on task. I really enjoyed watching the relationship between the boy and his new demon friend develop with each page - I loved his empathy, and the demon's reluctant liking for the boy.

The story is pacy and exciting, with just a touch of naughtiness - three elements that all boys can relate to. The story ended by setting the scene for the next story in what is bound to become a highly successful series. I'll definitely be on the look out for more from Andy Mulberry!

Be sure to check out the Book Blast Giveaway for a chance to win a $25 gift card from Amazon. Enter through the Rafflecopter below. Closing date May 23rd.
