Happy Birthday on Pancake Day

Today is a special day. 17 years ago I was privileged to have the most perfect gift ever - my daughter was born. I have never felt so much happiness as I did on that day. She was - and is - perfect. Happy birthday Mia!

Today is also a special day in the UK. It's Shrove Tuesday, the day that officially marks the eve of Lent. Lent is the lead up to Easter, lasting 40 days, where people generally give up something they enjoy to signify sacrifice. On the eve of Lent people traditionally used up all the goodies in their cupboards - eggs, milk, flour, butter etc - by making pancakes. Not pancakes as you know them in US, but pancakes that are more like French crepes. They are lush! Thin and warm, they can be served with chocolate or fruit sauce, compote, fresh fruit, ice cream, caramel or maple sauce, with raisins and sultanas, with savoury fillings like cheese and bacon, or simply sprinkled with sugar with a squirt of lemon juice. Yum! We had them in school today - the children couldn't wait for pancake time and we hardly got anything done, they were that excited. If you haven't tried them, you really should. They are so easy to make and your kiddos will love them.

Finally, a bit of good news today. I have been offered a regular position teaching French to a cluster of seven schools. It's only for one day every week until the beginning of the summer term, and it will be very hard work fitting seven schools into the school day (the timetable is very tight and travelling time between schools has been shaved to the bare minimum) but it's what I do best. As a Primary language specialist I love teaching any languages, especially French. I am really looking forward to this one. Watch this space!

And on that note, au revoir pour maintenant, nos da pawb, Sue signing off.

  2. Congrats on the new job. Seven schools in one day...wow. I try to teach a few French words to my first graders. You wouldn't mind adding an 8th school to your schedule, would you? :)
