“Without teacher appreciation there can’t be any student progress.”

“Without teacher appreciation there can’t be any student progress.”  Theresa Grimm

Surfing the net today I came across this quote. I wanted to share it with you because it's particularly appropriate this week. For me, it nails down exactly what teacher appreciation is all about.

We all have personal experiences in teaching that have left us a little scarred, but it never changes the way we approach our teaching, the children we have been given care of, or the way we turn up day in day out and put our heart and soul into what we do. It's our love of teaching and seeing the end result that spurs us on.

I love what I do, but let's face it, sometimes we all have days when it's difficult to see a way through. That's why this week is so important, because, for a brief moment in time, a few days only, the attention moves from child to teacher. It's a small but much appreciated way of showing that people care about teachers and appreciate the job they do.

“Teachers appreciate being appreciated, for teacher appreciation is their highest award.” William Prince

Teaching is terrifically difficult. I consider teaching to be a profession, up there with the likes of doctors, lawyers, surgeons, dentists etc. However, in some areas the teaching profession is held in lower esteem, with teachers viewed as public servants in much the same way as office workers or park attendants. Put them in our shoes for one day and see their views change! One of my favourite quotes just about sums it all up for me

“If a doctor, lawyer, or dentist had 40 people in his office at one time, all of whom had different needs, and some of whom didn't want to be there and were causing trouble, and the doctor, lawyer, or dentist, without assistance, had to treat them all with professional excellence for nine months, then he might have some conception of the classroom teacher's job.”
Donald Quinn
